One of the great aspects of the MIND BODY membership is that it is for everybody. People of any age, shape or level of health and fitness can learn and benefit from its movements within the Pilates and Transform (yoga style) classes. All exercises start with breathing and correct spine alignment. Once this has been learnt, the abdominal s and muscles of the core can be activated and felt working by doing no more than lying on the back in a natural spine position.
Each exercise has progressions to stronger levels when needed, but they are all still effective at the easiest level.
Pilates and Transform not only create good posture, but also conditions the entire body, resulting in a longer, leaner, more toned physique. With slow flowing movements and control, applied to each and every exercise, in combination with the continual use of focused breathing, the mind will be active and focused, creating a full mind body connection and workout.
Pilates focuses on strengthening the “powerhouse” (abs and buttocks) to execute exercises, which are designed to increase flexibility, mobility, strengthen muscles and improve posture. The method involves concentration and the coordination of breath and movement, thereby helping to balance mind and body.

MATWORK CLASS LEVELS
With Pilates at Kingborough Sports Centre, we have a strong emphasis on functional and appropriate progression and therefore structure our classes at different levels and offer a variety of different class focus’.
Pilates is a different form of exercise where the basics are continually required and re-enforced through all the levels; using poor muscle patterning may prevent you from progressing properly with good form and therefore not getting the best from your workout. You can then enrol in any of the Fundamental classes.
The Pilates Fundamentals class is designed for participants who have not done Pilates before (or have had a big break, or not done our style of Pilates before). It is a once off class (that can be repeated as many times as you wish) where you will be initiated to our style of Pilates mat classes and terminology: specifically pelvic floor, breathing, neutral spine and neutral pelvis. You will also be taken through many exercises that form the basis and work in your body to perform almost all of the exercises in the Pilates repertoire.
The beginners class is for people who have never done Pilates before. It consists of very gentle exercises done on a mat in either a sitting or lying down position. The primary focus is on awareness of the spine, proper breathing, core strength and flexibility. The outcome of Pilates training is a balanced body, which is strong and supple, flat stomach, balanced legs, and a strong back.
The progressive class is for people who have some experience in the Pilates method or have completed the “fundamental classes”. The fundamental exercises learnt in the beginners are repeated but are made more challenging by layering arm movements, neck flexion, more repetitions and sets as well as linking moves together to create a flowing sequence. Some new, more advanced exercises will also be learnt, but the participant is encouraged to work at their own level at all times and only progress the moves as they feel comfortable. The primary focus is still on awareness of the spine, proper breathing, core strength and flexibility.
